Gabriel Chaile
Tucumán, Argentina, 1985
Gabriel Chaile creates sculptures and installations on a public scale, mainly from mud and adobe, materials charged with collective symbolic and ritual dimensions that the artist synthesizes in his visual anthropology. His works process the imagery and technical as well as formal repertoires of indigenous cosmologies in Northeastern Argentina. Collaboration is key for Chaile, in exchanges through cooking and food where he draws his practice near to wide-ranging articulations with migrant collectives, peripheral communities and political frontiers.
Among his recent solo exhibitions are Gabriel Chaile: No hay nada que destruya el corazón como la pobreza, BAMPFA – Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, Berkeley, USA (2023); Principio de semejanza, Carpintaria, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (2023) and Time, Times and Half a Time, Barro, New York, USA (2023). The artist has also participated in the group shows The Milk of Dreams – 59th Venice Biennale, Venice, Italy (2022) Anozero – Coimbra Biennial of Contemporary Art, Coimbra, Portugal (2022); The Sowers, Fondation Thalie, Brussels, Belgium (2021); and Soft Water Hard Stone : New Museum Triennial, New Museum, New York, USA (2020).
Chaile’s work is included in relevant public collections such as MALBA – Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires, Buenos Aires, Argentina; Fundación Costantini, Buenos Aires, Argentina; Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection, Madrid, Spain and Kadist Foundation, Paris, France.
